Tibet — Potala Palace (outside)
The magnificent Potala Palace was the religious and political center of Tibet,
as well as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas up until the 1959 invasion of Tibet by the Chinese.
The present palace dates back to 1645 when the fifth Dalai Lama began construction of the White Palace
(secular function), finished in 1648. The Red Palace (religious function) was added between 1690 and 1694.
